Landlord's Thoughts

Philosophical

Being a backstreet pub, I’ve always wanted to offer something slightly different. You can walk into any high street pub and order a pint of generic, mass-produced lager that’s brewed under license. In here, we offer at least 2 imported German lagers, brewed there according to their strict purity laws. Stuttgarter Helles is our best selling lager. 4.2%, lovely session lager. Meister Pils is our premium beer.
We love a bit of craft beer too. Our current resident is Howling Hop’s Tropical Deluxe. A beautiful, hoppy, fruity 3.8% beer. Perfect for a Summer session.
Our current guest keg is also from our German friends at the Dinkelacker Brewery. Hopfenwunder. It’s simply stunning. A smooth German beer dry hopped with American hops!

Passionate

Method

As you know, I’m completely passionate about keeping real ales. Pre-COVID we would always boast 6 different ales. I’ve had to temporarily stick to 4 regular beers, with the occasional guest ale thrown in. We currently offer the local Wibbler’s IPA, Mighty Oak’s Maldon Gold & Adnam’s Broadside. Our best selling ale is Oakham Citra. We are still managing to shift 3-4 casks a week. It’s still my favourite ale in the country. We are also part of the Oakademy.

Quality

beer selection

Having been in the trade for nearly thirty years, I have always had a passion for looking after beers, real ales and keeping a good cellar. I was fortunate to inherit a very well kept cellar in 2009, here at the Coach. I have strived to maintain that and we are proud to have a great reputation for the best real ale in town and have appeared in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for the past twenty three consecutive years. Pre-COVID, I would always look to have six real ales on. We currently offer four, to make sure we maintain the consistency and quality. Mighty Oak’s Captain Bob, Adnam’s Broadside, Oakham Citra and a rotating, usually golden, guest ale. Hopefully, something for everyone!
Being slightly tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the high street, I think we can get away with offering a few different keg beers. We currently serve Meister Pilsner and Stuttgarter Helles from the Dinkelacker Brewery. These are brewed in Germany according to their strict purity laws and imported. They aren’t mass produced under license over here. You will taste the difference. A rotating guest keg which is currently our first attempt at a sour beer from Rooster’s in Yorkshire. ‘The Hanging Gardens of Basildon’, a Peach, Grapefruit and Basil Sour! One of my favourite, modern breweries is Howling Hops in Hackney Wick. I have managed to persuade Gray & Sons to stock their ‘Tropical Deluxe’ for me exclusively. With four draught and real ciders, a very good pint of Guinness, fine wines and about twenty gins on offer, I’m confident there’s something for everyone here. Cheers

Perfect

wine  selection

I have always been astounded by the lack of quality wine served in so many good pubs. Here at the Coach we use a well respected and established wine importer, ‘Winefantastic’. Many of the wines are exclusive to them and John works hard to find wines that are good quality but also good value.
I do believe you get what you pay for and am a firm believer that most customers would be prepared to pay a little extra for a better quality wine, even more so to accompany their food.
The trendy Provence and Marlborough wines are not cheap but superb wines. The Aromo Winemakers from Chile provide the excellent Merlot, Sauvignon & Private Reserve Malbec. I think the Murphy’s Shiraz is one of the nicest I’ve tasted. Hopefully there’s something to suit everyone’s palate

Finest.

gin selection

In 2018, the flavored gin subcategory experienced a 78 percent volume sales increase globally, according to IWSR Drinks Market Analysis.

Of course, by definition, all gins can be described as flavored spirits. Typically juniper-forward, the distillate traditionally sees a neutral spirit infused with fistfuls of botanicals to provide a complex, nuanced beverage.

But the emerging subcategory of infused gins reimagines which ingredients can be used to flavor the increasingly popular spirit. Ideal for summer sipping, the category is rich in options, ranging from fruity to floral to herbaceous and earthy to sweet.

From bottles that are ideal for fruit-forward spritzes, to floral infusions perfect for modern twists on classic cocktails…We Have Over 20 Different Gins In Stock…
